Here you can meet Team Intrepid. We are a group of regular people with extraordinary dreams. We like to push the limits and boundaries of our bodies. Our biggest race of 2009 was
Primal Quest the Badlands.
We'll race shorter races to prepare but Primal Quest is our Olympics this year.
We had a new adventure racing team for Primal Quest this year. Chris McWatters, Canice Harte and Todd Phillips. Yes you read that right! Todd is no longer a volunteer, but a racer on our adventure racing team.
I have to update the above. At the last minute Todd had to pull out with a broken clavicle. Ian Hoag took his place.
Ian was a navy seal and had a great career in the Navy. He came on and helped us navigate, tow, and motivate. He was a stellar addition and did a wonderful job.
Our adventure racing team - Intrepid- has a goal to push the edge of what we are capable of doing and leaving all we have out on the course. Our motto is
"Keep Moving Forward."

OUR GOALS
1) To win

4) To inspire others to Live on the Edge pushing themselves both physically and spiritually farther than they thought was humanly possible
TODD PHILLIPS
Todd is a medical volunteer from Primal Quest's past, chemical weapons inspector, inherent traveler, and the mule of Team Intrepid.
Todd has been involved in Primal Quest since the San Juan's. He has been part of the volunteer crew every year since.
In Utah he helped Kim get through it by taping her feet, and mostly by encouraging words. He was an inspiration during a very rough race. Kim is not the only adventure racing team he has helped. Others seek Todd out to let them know he helped them finish. What an amazing place to be!
Todd will tackle PQ this year himself. He is a talented writer and extremely funny. You'll laugh and maybe even cry as your read his blog. OK maybe not, but certainly you'll be entertained. You'll see what it takes to make it to the starting line of PQ.
Follow Todd as he documents his training mishaps, travel stories, and anything else that crosses his mind as he prepares to compete on Intrepid's adventure racing team in this year's installment of Primal Quest Badlands presented by SPOT.
Todd's first blog post
It’s difficult to be witty when staring at a blank, white computer screen. That level of repartee comes from conversations at cocktail parties and is doled out by political pundits. I’m just not one of those guys. Now if you want me to explain how I came to try and fill these pages, then that is where the story begins.
It was a dark and stormy night. No, seriously…it was. I was sitting in a horse pasture under the medical tent of Primal Quest 2004 in the San Juan Islands, Washington State. I had been working as a medical volunteer for the first time, and I was freezing my proverbial “round, circular orbs of personal affect” off when I thought that for once in my life I would love to switch places with those who were, I thought, less fortunate than me; adventure racers.
The weather had been brutally uncomfortable for the first three or four days and I was sequestered under a leaking canvas tent, watching “Man on Fire” with Denzel Washington on my iMac, wrapped in every stitch of clothing I had borrowed to keep warm and basically doing my best at 2 am to be cheerful to those who wanted band-aids.
I am from Oklahoma City, OK. and ran for Oklahoma State University. I worked for myself in the sport of Track & Field and in the Health & Wellness Industry for a few years. Then I felt called to get into youth ministry.
I am now a Camp Director at the truest Adventure Camp in the U.S. - Camp Eagle near San Antonio, TX. I am engulfed in my passions every moment I am awake.
I got into Rock Climbing, Bouldering, Hiking, Biking, Kayaking (not flat water, I would rather pluck my eyelashes out one at a time), and everything else that is human-powered and in nature while I was in High School.
I have been a Nat'l level mid-distance and distance runner since I was 13.
I started on an adventure racing team during college (first race was a 36-Hour race).
I started racing on my mountain bike a couple years ago.
I also like all the major U.S. sports, except baseball - sorry, too much standing and not enough cool injury potential.
I also play as many instruments as I can get my hands on, especially drums.
My favorite thing about endurance sports is competition. I know it's supposed to be "me against the terrain", and "me against myself", but I really love beating others while I'm out there!
No matter what it is I'm doing, God has allowed me to do it, so I do everything for Him.
Chris' Aspirations:
I can't wait to get in real shape again. I will start doing speed work on and off soon on as soon as my body is ready for it. I want to race at the international level on an Adventure Racing Team, Mountain Biking, Trail Running, Ultra Marathons, and long Triathlons.
In the near future: I hope to compete in the Ironman, Primal Quest, some Ultras, and learn how to ride a unicycle, and show people my faith in Christ all along the way!
Update: Chris has completed Primal Quest Badlands and done a Double Ironman in 2009.
Kimberly Dunkin
Kim is 40 and married to Phil. They have one son.
She is a part time karate teacher and stay at home mom. She loves competition more than anything and that is why she enjoys being on an adventure racing team.
In fact, she doesn't normally play video games, but was playing the nintendo ds. When asked why?, she realized it was because it keeps up with the records and she is trying to take the #1 spot. If it didn't keep score, she wouldn't play.
Just like growing up you don't play catch. That is boring. It was always burn out.

CANICE HARTE
Canice is a highly competitive athlete that loves to see the team function well together and succeed. He is always aspiring for the win.
He will be the teams' navigator. He received his training the in the marine core. He was the team leader at 3rd Reconnaissance (1985 to 1989)
After getting out of the Corps he went to school and started competing seriously in Triathlons. He stopped racing because climbing really was his passion. He grew up and lived in the San Francisco Bay Area and had easy access to the Valley and many other climbing areas which kept him busy.
Only after a motorcycle accident did he back off climbing. He then turned his attention to being on an adventure racing team and now paragliding.
We recently were interviewed for a magazine. These were Canice answers that allow you to get to know him a bit.
I am 41 years old and married to Katy Wang. We have a 23 month old daughter named Penelope and live in Park City, UT. I'm a consummate outdoors person and am hyper competitive.
2. Inspirational Quote
"It's good to hard, but it's hard to be smart"
3. Funny moment
While I was in the Marine Corps I was on a training exercise for a week where we were sleep deprived and fed 1 MRE a day. In the 6 days on the course we had 2 1/2 hour sleep. Towards the end of the training one of our guys thought his food was running away so he started chasing it. Eventually we tackled him and brought him back to reality but I laugh every time I think of that day. As for me, I saw flying pizzas.
4. Worst Injury
I was commuting to work on my motorcycle when a steel pipe fell off a contractors truck in front of me. The pipe went through my right knee at 55mph and after a signed waiver to amputate my leg, a week in the hospital, four surgeries and 3 years of rehab all is good to go. Luckily for me my Patella did it's job and absorbed the brunt of the impact, thus saving my femur, tibula and fibula. The patella itself was crushed and part of it had to be removed but they were able to rebuild the rest. The doctors would like to do another surgery but I'm tired of recovering and am having too much fun using my leg.
5. Best wilderness tip:
Climbing Denali with a friend of mine was a great epic trip that I'll always look back on with a big smile.
Favorite Snack/RecipeI love ice cream. If I wasn't racing I would have a banana split and wash it down with a milk shake. then I would go out for some more ice cream. Probably two scoops of chocolate on a sugar cone with chocolate sprinkles.
Sun glasses. I have blue eyes and they are very sensitive to light.
9. Memorable moment
Too many to list all of them so I'll go with the big ones like the birth of my daughter, my wedding, the loss of my brother to cancer, the first time I was shot at.
10. Mental strategy
Internalize my own weakness and draw strength from those around me. Always pass and don't let yourself get passed and laugh at the absurdity of the moment.
